ss2007The NCAS Climate Modelling Summer School is a two-week course during which a mix of lectures and practical assignments are used to deliver world class teaching. The course draws upon the experience and expertise of leaders in the academic field to teach the students about the current state of climate modelling. The summer school aims to allow participants to understand and apply the methods used in today's climate modelling research.

Climate models are fundamental tools for learning about our planet, assisting scientists and governments in assessing current and future risks and vulnerabilities. The reality of today’s climate modelling landscape, with ever more complex numerical models, running on the world’s largest supercomputers, requires a high degree of competence and efficiency, which must be instilled in scientists at the early stages of their careers. This type of highly specialised training is virtually absent in the UK's traditional academic approach.

The High-Resolution Climate Modelling projects within NCAS, in collaboration with the Met Office, have continued to push the limit on today’s climate modelling frontiers and have generated a high level of expertise, which will be returned to students in the form of knowledge through our summer school. This fourth NCAS Summer School will continue the bi-annual climate modelling series offered to the UK and international community.

The Summer School will focus on providing skills that can bring scientists from different disciplines in touch with the state-of-the-art modelling and technology.

This will be achieved through exposure to advanced theoretical lectures and seminars, strengthened daily with hands-on work on methods and practicals. Students must have a strong interest in:

• Learning about the mathematical and numerical foundations of climate models
• becoming experts in climate modelling
• acquiring the know-how needed for designing and operating modern climate models
• critically analysing climate models results
