The sea ice volume estimates from CPOM are based on satellite observations of freeboard height, which is converted to thickness and then volume. Thus the volume estimates are directly derived from observations. This is in contrast to PIOMAS which is a model reanalysis assimilating ice concentration: the PIOMAS volume estimates are not directly derived from observations.
