NCAS delivers both coordinated research programmes
and national capability under agreed programmes of work with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). NCAS is
currently working to a five year plan for the period 2006-2011. The
programme was approved by NERC Council in June 2005 in response to a
proposal submitted in 2004.The NCAS programme is organised around 13 science themes and 5 technology themes. Please click on the theme headings below for details of the programmes. NCAS Science Themes

These research programmes will continue for the period 2006-2011 and beyond. However the mechanisms by which NERC funds the research will change from 2009 onwards. In 2007 NERC adopted a new strategy, Next Generation Science for Planet Earth. Our research programmes form key ingredients of the NERC strategy. However under this strategy, NERC will organise its research around seven science themes and our science will fall under the following themes:
