Earth System Science Spring School 2014

The Earth System Science Spring School (ES4) 2014 will take place in Lancaster between 30th March and 11th April. ES4 provides PhD students and early-career researchers with a broad foundation in earth system science and its applications. The school is managed by NCAS and involves several major UK research institutes allowing access to the knowledge and expertise of renowned scientists. ES4 will deliver an intensive programme including earth, marine, terrestrial, atmospheric and polar science.

Course details

The Earth System Science Spring School provides students with a background in Earth systems and how they interact. A wider knowledge of the Earth's systems allows students to place their research into context and encourages collaborations across disciplines. A mixture of lectures and practical sessions are used to deliver the course content, providing both scientific knowledge and hands-on experience. As well as formal learning, students will get experience of field work. Students will also present their own work, allowing them a relaxed environment to practice presentation skills and to learn about each other’s work. During the course there will be a strong emphasis on student participation and community building, with the intention to create lasting networks.

The school will be based at the University of Lancaster in 2014.

Cost: £300 per person for NERC funded students/researchers. The cost of the spring school for Non-NERC students is £500 (GBP). This includes accommodation, meals, internet access during course and field trips.  Travel to and from Lancaster is not included. We recommend that participants arrive by train.

The Earth System Science Spring School (ES4) takes place at a different location every year. ES4 provides NERC-funded PhD students, NERC staff currently working towards their PhD, and early-career NERC researchers with a broad foundation in earth system science and its applications. The school is managed by NCAS, in partnership with a number of UK research facilities. This partnership provides a wide-ranging knowledge base on which to draw to create a comprehensive and world-class curriculum.

As well as formal learning, students will get experience of field work with a day spent in the field looking at geological aspects of the earth. Students will also present their own work, allowing them a relaxed environment to practice presentation skills and to learn about each other's work.

The School covers topics in atmospheric, earth, ecologic, hydrologic, marine, oceanographic and polar sciences, as well as climate change economics and policy. An extensive range of current research topics are taught in a number of formats, including formal lectures, workshops, group work, presentations, field observations and practical exercises.
