The Facility for Ground based Atmospheric Measurements* (FGAM) is a National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) facility consisting of a distributed set of ground-based and specialised airborne (FAAM) instruments in the UK that are designed to make measurements of small-scale and meso-scale physical and chemical features in the atmosphere. FGAM is closely linked to NCAS weather, NCAS composition and to the Met Office.

A major goal of FGAM is to provide an infrastructure that promotes collaboration amongst the atmospheric science research community, particularly across the NCAS weather and NCAS composition science areas. Both FGAM and the Met Office are keen to promote collaborative projects that bring their respective capabilities together to tackle topics of interest to both communities. The African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (AMMA) project is an example of such a field campaign. The aerosol and chemical transport in tropical convection (ACTIVE) project, Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP), and the Tropospheric ORganic CHemistry Experiment (TORCH) are examples of recent collaborative field campaigns using FGAM instruments.

There are numerous FGAM Instrument Scientists (ISs) associated with the instruments to: facilitate non-specialist use; maintain and run equipment; ensure quality of data; and archive data at BADC.

Individuals or groups can apply to use the instruments, mainly in collaboration with the host university, by contacting Prof. Alan Blyth (blyth at env.leeds), the Head of FGAM, in the first instance.

Please note that there are no funds available within FGAM to deploy the instruments.
